Accra floods (sakaman a surburb of Accra)
2009-07-07 18:11:52

Sakaman a suburb of Accra was yet again the scene of the perennial floods that have characterized the rainy seasons of the country. The new drains constructed in the neighborhood in the early part of this year could do little to prevent the rains that always cause havoc to residents of the community. In less than two weeks, the community has had to bear the brunt of these floods and residents of the community are calling on the member of parliament for the area (Ablekuman north) to help alleviate their plight.

In the first of the floods that hit the neighborhood last month, properties worth millions of Ghana cedis were lost but no occurrence of human deaths. Roads in the neighborhood that is used by motorist who ply the Mallam-Kaneshie highway has become a shadow of what used to exist because of these floods.

Speaking to some residents of the neighborhood, they attributed the cause of the recent floods in the area to the narrow nature of the drains which were constructed. to them, this was never the case in the past. Some also attributed the case to the chocked drains in the neighborhood which have not been de-silted for god knows when.

A resident Mr Benjamin Baidoo a contractor, also alleged that the shoddy nature of the drains constructed in the community has caused them more harm than good.

According these residents, they are expecting the member of parliament for the area to put up a reactive measure to forestall any future floods because this situations is painting a bad picture about the residential area as it has been brought to the limelight of most media discussions in the wake of the first floods which occurred on the 19th of June.
